Are you a photographer, videographer, or multimedia producer looking to apply to be a member of Diversify Photo? You have come to the right place.
When does Diversify Photo review applications?
We review applications on a rolling basis, typically twice a year depending on application volume and capacity.
Who can apply?
Photographers, editors, and visual producers from groups underrepresented in the visual media landscape who are working towards a career in editorial, commercial, or fine art photography are invited to apply for membership in Diversify Photo.
How much does it cost?
Membership is (and always has been) free for photographers.
Does Diversify Photo choose who gets invited?
We enlist a rotating panel of leading industry professionals to review every applicant’s portfolio. Photographers who are deemed to be working at the highest levels of the profession, those who are ready for professional assignments, are recommended for Full membership. The panel also identifies promising emerging photographers to recommend for Up Next membership.
This vetting process enables the photo editors, art directors, and art buyers who use our database to confidently expand their professional networks knowing that members are selected on the merit of their work.
What do the reviewers consider?
In general, photographers recommended for membership have well-organized portfolios that are easy to navigate and highlight the photographer’s skills. These portfolios should demonstrate:
- repeated commissioned and/or assigned work with brands, publications, and organizations for a regional or national audience.
- current work that is editorial, fashion, commercial, or rooted in the fine arts.
- a focused, committed approach, and a developed artistic style for the photographer.
Why was my application not accepted?
Some of the reasons an applicant may not be recommended for membership include:
- A website that failed to load quickly or that gave a 404 (page not found) error.
- Portfolio links point to agencies, businesses, or other groups, which makes it hard for the reviewers to determine what the applicant’s role is.
- Portfolios that only include Instagram accounts. Instagram can be an excellent way to showcase your work and connect with editors, but they generally do not provide the level of necessary information to make a hiring decision that can be found on a portfolio website.
- Portfolios that only showcase direct-to-consumer photography, including weddings, family portraits, or pet photography.
Can I join as an Editor, Art Director, Curator, etc.?
