Photography and photojournalism are forever evolving, and we are here to examine and celebrate approaches that go beyond the surface. These panel discussions will cover the intricacies of long-term story creation; the strategies for working better with communities that have experienced trauma; and the methodology behind journalism that focuses on solutions, not just problems.

Kriston Jae Bethel
Kriston Jae Bethel is a Philadelphia-based editorial and documentary photographer, whose work covers a diverse range of subjects, including politics, gun violence, social issues and global health. With a human-centered perspective, he strives to connect the narratives of everyday individuals with broader national and global concerns.
In 2021, Kriston received an Award of Excellence from Pictures of the Year International for work during the 2020 US presidential election. He holds a degree in journalism and political science from Temple University, where he still shares his expertise as adjunct faculty or guest lecturer.
Andrea Morales
Andrea Morales is a documentary photographer, journalist, and educator living and working in Memphis, Tennessee. Her personal work attempts to lens the issues of displacement, disruption, and magic. She earned a B.S. in journalism at the University of Florida, an M.A. in visual communication at Ohio University, and an M.F.A. in documentary expression at the University of Mississippi. She has worked as a photojournalist in newsrooms small and large, such as The Concord Monitor, The Lima News, and The New York Times. Currently, she serves as the visuals editor at MLK50: Justice Through Journalism, a nonprofit newsroom in Memphis reporting from the intersection of power, poverty and public policy.

Mikhael Simmonds
Mikhael Simmonds, is the executive director of the Center for Community Media at the Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY.
Before joining CCM, Simmonds served as the director of new relationships at the Solutions Journalism Network, where he co-led operations, strategy, and execution around how SJN trained journalists developed teaching products, and coached news outlets.
Over the years, Simmonds has worked with outlets such as Democracy Now! and The New York Amsterdam News and NGOs, including the Y International and the U.N. Department of Public Information and NGO Relations.
